The 29-year-old spent four years with the Gunners after signing from Marseille on a free transfer in 2004, going onto partner Cesc Fabregas in central midfield following the retirement of Patrick Vieira.
However, in 2008 Flamini left the Emirates Stadium for AC Milan and after five years in Italy is once again a free agent and has been training with Arsene Wenger's men.
Premier League clubs such as Fulham and West Ham United considered signing the France international, but were put off by the midfielder's £75,000-a-week wage demands.
Yet with Wenger's side struggling for midfield re-enforcement and lacking any grit and physicality in the centre of the pitch, the club may well turn to Flamini.
The north London side have seen several transfers slip through their fingers so far this summer, with Gonzalo Higuain and Luiz Gustavo both opting not to come to the Emirates.
This week Arsenal have also had a bid for Newcastle United's Yohan Cabaye turned down and fear that Paris Saint-Germain may out-bid them for the 27-year-old.
Although Flamini was a popular character at the club when the French midfielder was last with Arsenal, five years have passed since then and bringing the player back could be seen as a move backwards for Wenger - who is already under increasing pressure.
